Wellington Thyroid Scan and Uptake is a popular procedure at our facility at Medical Diagnostic Scans. During this procedure, patients have to swallow a capsule containing radioactive iodine during the exam. The thyroid normally gathers iodine in order to produce the thyroid hormone. Once the radioactive iodine builds up in the thyroid, it makes an image with the nuclear camera, which shows an outline of the thyroid. The Thyroid Scan and Uptake helps to show and measure how well the thyroid functions. For most patients, more measurements can be taken if need be, but they can take anywhere from one to three hours longer. Results from additional tests will not be available until the next day.
